Workshop in-situ 1 – A culture of reusing

6 days of intensive workshop situated in La Place des possibles, with 40 french students and 15 partners from Italy, Greece and France,  in Saint-Laurent-en-Royans – France, in may 2022.

The pedagogical objectives of this workshop consisted in exploring the concept of reuse by prefiguring and constructing light, reversible and ephemeral micro-architectures at scale 1 and discovering the area by interviewing actors about how this concept resonates with their own practices.

The prototypes built would allow testing uses and construction techniques and will serve as a tool for fine-tuning the perennial project of La Place des Possibles. They would also be used to experiment with low-tech construction techniques that favor local material resources (materials and components) and immaterial resources (know-how and operating methods).

At the same time, the participants would be able to explore the territory by identifying the actors and resources, as well as the production of reflexive and narrative contents for a fanzine finalized during the second workshop and a video describing the workshop process.

3 educational environments and 5 teams

  • Talking : presentations, lectures on targeted themes : reuse, work in architectural groups, exchanges on outdoor pedagogy with the students;
  • Co-design and co-production : in groups, according to targeted topics, to produce tools and supports for the users of La Place des Possibles and local actors;
  • Living : collective preparation of shared meals and evening events, cleaning of the premises, tidying up.

Each session was a source of individual and collective learning, theoretical, technical and social, on co-construction, profession and community life, resource management, organization and group logistics. The convivial and more informal moments were opportunities for social learning, exchange and confrontation between students and stakeholders. Two evening events took place in the public space, which encouraged the inhabitants to participate and exchange with the students.

The participants were divided into 5 groups organized according to a production theme:

  • construction of 5 mobile modules : design and build mobile furnitures with reused materials to test some new uses for the place and improve daily life of the users,
  • production of a sensitive map of the territory about “the culture of reusing” restored through drawings, map and podcasts
  • production of contents for fanzine
  • production of a video about the ongoing process of the workshop
  • collective caring for organising meals and cooking, for breakfast, lunch and dinner for 60 people.

The two last groups were transversal and require the participation of volunteer from each other group, as well as a rotation.
