The “Culture of Reusing” workshop took place at La Place des Possibles in Saint Laurent en Royans (FR) in May 2022, with 40 French students and 15 partners from Italy, Greece, and France.

This workshop focused on exploring the concept of reuse by designing and constructing light, reversible, and ephemeral micro-architectures at full scale, while also discovering the area by interviewing local actors about how this concept resonates with their own practices.

Pedagogical objectives

The prototypes built during the workshop allowed participants to test different uses and construction techniques and served as tools for refining the long-term project of La Place des Possibles. They were also used to experiment with low-tech construction methods that emphasize local material resources (materials and components) and intangible resources (know-how and operating methods).

Simultaneously, participants were able to explore the area by identifying local actors and resources, and by producing reflective and narrative content for a fanzine, which was finalized during the second workshop, as well as a video describing the workshop process.

Educational environments

Talking: Presentations and lectures on targeted themes such as reuse, collective practice work, and exchanges on outdoor pedagogy with the students.

Co-design and Co-production: Group work focused on specific topics to produce tools and resources for the users of La Place des Possibles and local stakeholders.

Living: Collective preparation of shared meals and evening events, cleaning of the premises, and tidying up.

Each session provided opportunities for both individual and collective learning—whether theoretical, technical, or social—on topics such as co-construction, professional and community life, resource management, organization, and group logistics. The more informal and convivial moments were opportunities for social learning, exchange, and dialogue between students and stakeholders. Two evening events were held in the public space, encouraging local residents to participate and interact with the students.

A collective work organised in teams

The participants were divided into five groups, each organized around a specific production theme:

Building Team : constructed five mobile modules : designed and built mobile furniture using reused materials to test new uses for the space and improve daily life for its users.

Territory Team : created a sensitive map of the territory centered around “the culture of reusing” represented through drawings, maps and podcasts

Editorial Team : produced contents for the fanzine.

Communication Team : producted of a video documenting the ongoing process of the workshop

Event Team : Took charge of organizing meals and cooking for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for 60 people.
