We are a collective of 7 architects researching and working since 2010 crossing the fields of architecture, urbanism, public art, design and DIY practice. We have been promoting projects in Italy and Europe of common relational spaces, giving form to both dismissed and unseen images of the city.
Public space is the main core of our professional research since it is the background of our daily life and it no longer meets the real and immediate contemporary needs. Our goal is to respond to social instances through experimenting new kinds of collaborative interactions between inhabitants and commons as well as occasions to test the boundaries of the architectural creation process.
We work on a multi-scalar level, from ephemeral public acts, temporary architecture, DIY, to the urban scale of public works. The idea is to integrate interdisciplinary skills, participatory practices and innovative methods, combining the physical redevelopment of places with the creation of new identities, narratives and a collective sense of public space.
We adopt the laboratory approach as a pedagogical strategy, opening the design process and bringing together complex and non-deterministic methodologies by hybridizing research, design and construction phases. Construction becomes a tool for research and experimentation on both material and immaterial production systems.
Orizzontale is a permanent lab and through a constant interchange between theoretical and practical research, we try to collect and assemble together ideas and experiences to then share it by participating in the international contemporary debate, like the Biennale of Venice or European programmes.
